COMMON QUESTIONS
Taking the first steps to a new you is courageous, but it can also be intimidating and overwhelming.
Here are some commonly asked questions about what to expect from therapy.
What should I expect in the first session?
The First Session typically lasts 60 minutes. Time is allocated for completing necessary forms, including insurance, demographic/psychosocial history information, informed consent, privacy practices policy and payments. We will also begin the psychological assessment and begin to identify therapeutic needs and goals. During the first several sessions, we will take time to get acquainted and build a rapport. I feel strongly that the client and the therapist should be a good match, as it is imperative to the therapeutic process and for progress in treatment.
Do I really need counseling?
Life often presents one with challenging and sometimes overwhelming situations. Sometimes we get stuck or feel discontent with our life. Or maybe you’ve experienced something in your childhood that has impacted your adult relationships and behavior. Even if you have been able to successfully manage these difficulties before, there is nothing wrong with seeking extra support. It takes courage and self-awareness to know that one needs some extra support, and that is commendable.
Why do people go to therapy?
There are various reason and motivations for coming to psychotherapy. Some things that bring people into therapy can include (but is certainly not limited to); major life transitions, family stressors, addiction, anxiety, divorce or relationship troubles, parenting issues, traumatic experiences, a death of a loved one, new or loss of a job, childhood abuse, and sexual assault. Experiences like these can leave people needing some assistance managing their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors.
Therapy can offer some encouragement and empowerment to build the skills necessary to better cope and manage through these times. Some people may find themselves seeking therapy if they want to gain more self-awareness or to accomplish a specific task or goal. Overall, people often seek psychotherapy when they are ready to make meaningful changes in their lives.
What is therapy like?
The therapeutic experience is different for each person, as goals, needs, and individual differences shape the scope of therapy. Generally speaking, individuals often explore and discuss current events and experiences, personal history related to the reason for seeking treatment, psycho-educational material (from therapist), and progress and insights gained since prior sessions.
The client often leads the session and the therapist, typically, meets the client where they are. It is normal in therapy for sensitive or personal topics to emerge and be discussed. This is generally at a pace that is appropriate for the individual and the therapy process.
Therapy may challenge some of your current thinking or behavioral patterns, but that is a normal part of the process. Therapy often has benefits for those who undertake it.
How long will I be in psychotherapy?
The duration of treatment largely depends on the therapy needs and circumstances of each individual. Therapy can be short-term for a specific issue, or longer-term to deal with more difficult patterns, trauma recovery or a desire for more personal development. Either way, it is most common to schedule regular sessions with your therapist, usually on a weekly basis.
Is what we talk about in therapy confidential?
Confidentiality is pivotal to the counseling relationship. Due to the sensitive nature and subject matter discussed in therapy, trust is required between the client and the therapist. In part, this trust comes from understanding that what is said in a session stays confidential. Your therapist should go over an informed consent form, which contains a confidential disclosure agreement that explains your confidentiality and the few limits of confidentiality. These limits include *suspected abuse (past or present) or neglect of children, adults, and elders. These are required to be reported to the appropriate authorities, including Child Protection and law enforcement, based on information provided by the client or collateral sources.
*If there is a court-ordered subpoena or if the therapist has reason to suspect the client is seriously in danger of harming him/herself or has threatened to harm another person.
Do you accept my insurance and how does that work?
To determine if you have mental health coverage through your insurance carrier, the first and best option is to call them. Check your coverage carefully and make sure you understand their answers. Some helpful questions you can ask them are:
- Do I have outpatient mental health insurance benefits?
- What is my deductible and has it been met?
- How many sessions per year does my health insurance cover?
- What is the coverage amount per therapy session?
- Is approval required from my primary care physician?
Pre-authorization for outpatient mental health services is not a requirement for insurance companies. Sessions are available as long as they are considered medically necessary. A mental health diagnosis is required in order to meet this medical necessity.
